DVC® detects long term changes in spontaneous activity in mice upon pathological conditions

Mediterrean diet has always been considered very healthy, especially using extra virgin Olive Oil. Hydroxytyrosol (HT), its foremost phenolic component, has very beneficial effects.

Researchers from Radboud University (NL) studied the effects of such HT diet on a mouse model for stroke.

Amongst the technologies used for this study was the Tecniplast Home Cage Monitoring System: DVC®. Clear stroke effects were detected as a decrement of spontaneous locomotor activity as compared to the control mice.

After HT, no amelioration of activity was visible but a better recognition performance was detected, the animals were also found to have a better grip.

This was also accompanied by an increase in cerebral blood flow and reduction in inflammatory markers.

All in all, HT confirmed its beneficial effects and DVC® (re)demonstrated that it can be used to detect long term changes in spontaneous activity in mice upon pathological conditions.
